Thursday's Eats and a Long Overdue Garden Update

Good Morning!

I left a very relaxed cat when I got up to go to work this morning.

And a hello from George as well (the first two were Fred - I know, I know, y'all can't tell 'em apart):

I don't actually speak that way, by the way, with the "y'all's" and everything; no idea why I do it when I'm blogging...It just comes out.

Breakfast: Optimum Slim with a sliced peach and Almond Breeze. Coffee once I got to work (not pictured).

Lunch - taken at home in the morning:

Got home from work and went out to check on things in the garden. More later, but I came in with:

Then I took my baby Fred for a walk...

Poor George tends to get the short end of the stick when it comes to walks. I can only walk one at a time - if you take them both, they try to go in different directions and it just never works. Fred makes a nuisance of himself unless he gets a walk, so I take him. George will be left behind in the yard yowling at us.

Today I did try, but we didn't get very far.

Honestly with George it's just about being where his people are. As long as he gets lots of attention, he's pretty happy.

After walking the Fabulous Felines, I took myself for a short walk, then came back to get supper. Husband of course got a page just at the moment that he was about to come help me. I had a little snack while starting to get things ready.

I had 4 Triscuits with hummus. My little addiction.

Supper - can you guess? More Bacon & Tomato sandwiches! I confess, I added a little cheddar cheese to mine. I know I didn't need to add cheese to bacon...I was standing there, knife hovering over my sandwich thinking: You don't need cheese. There's cheese in your salad. Just cut the sandwich. Next thing I knew, the knife was down and I was getting out the cheese. What can I say? It tasted really good.

Salad was romaine, cucumber, red bell pepper & tomatoes tossed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Then topped with some olives and Bocconcini Mozzarella.

I never eat as much bacon as I do during tomato season.

Now, onto the Garden Update.

It hasn't been a great summer. Rain, rain, rain, rain. A few weeks of stifling heat. And then...And then...Three weeks ago we had Tropical Storm Bill. I went out afterwards to find my garden flattened. I took pictures. I intended to do a post. But it just never happened. I picked up all my green tomatoes from the ground and went back into the house. I tried to talk myself into going out to see what I could salvage, but I just couldn't motivate myself. Whatever wind had been left in my gardening sails after this dismal summer had been sucked right out.

The next weekend we had Tropical Storm Danny. That one left us with a giant, gaping hole in our fence. We can't figure out how it happened - almost looks like something must have hit the fence? Anyway, got Husband and out we went to repair the damage as best we could. While I was out there, I did try to straighten things up in the garden. I rescued on bean plant. Was able to prop up the tomatoes. I still have carrots, onions and garlic in the ground. But I think the garden is pretty much done for the year.

Oddly enough, the container plants are fine, so we are still getting grape & cherry tomatoes. Anyway, here's a few photos of how things were looking today.

The Container Tomatoes

The two brave tomato plants that are trying to make a comeback (too late in the season I think)

And the whim that I am oh-so-glad I indulged in my seed purchases this year - Lemon Mint. Who knew it would be so pretty when it bloomed?

And I think I will leave it there for tonight. Apologies for any typos, etc, trying to get this done quickly so I can head to bed.

Have a great Friday everyone!

Oh MAN I love bacon tomato sandwiches.

I really love toasties, too: putting a piece of bread in the oven with a slice of cheese and a piece of bacon over it. It all melts together under the broiler. Delicious.

This has been a nasty gardening year everywhere, me thinks!
My tomatoes might (emphasis on might) produce a few smallish ones before succumbing to the frost that's bound to happen one night soon (especially if I'm not paying attention and forget to cover them!)

On the other hand, I have a bumper crop of root veggies (carrots that are bigger around than my wrist! - I'll try to post photos of those!)
and had huge quantities of peas and beans. The corn? I don't think we'll be having any corn roasts, unfortunately.
Am jealous of your bacon and tomato sandwiches! There is just nothing like those home-grown tomatoes for taste!

Oh I just love those cat pictures, especially the first one! You have such adorable, photogenic kitties.

And it's great the way you make healthy food look so tasty! Whenever I've tried to take pictures of my food it looks all gray and blurry. Yours looks much more tempting.

Sagan - have never tried a toastie (toasty?) - will have to give it a try one of these days. Pretty much anything with melted cheese makes me happy. :)

Bag Lady - Yep. I would like to not do this "no summer" thing ever again. We've had frost warnings the past two nights. Seems way too early for that.

Crabby - Thanks! Fred is a pretty good subject - he poses well (or should I say, he gives me the eye, then ignores me so I can take a photo). George is an attention hog, so as soon as you point a camera at him, and he realizes he's got your attention, he's likely to jump up and come running for cuddles...which is no bad thing either, really. :)
